Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how individuals communicate, interact, and perceive the world around them. Autism is a spectrum, meaning that it affects individuals in different ways and to varying degrees.

Signs and Symptoms

Children with Autism may exhibit a range of symptoms, including:

  • Difficulty with social interactions and understanding social cues
  • Challenges in communication, including delayed speech or difficulty initiating conversations
  • Repetitive behaviours or routines, such as hand-flapping or insistence on sameness
  • Intense focus on specific interests or topics
  • Sensory sensitivities, such as being overwhelmed by loud noises or bright lights

Diagnosis and Assessment

Autism is typically diagnosed through a comprehensive evaluation by healthcare professionals, which may involve observations, assessments, and input from parents and teachers. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for supporting children with Autism.

Supporting Your Child at Home

Here are some practical strategies to help support your child:

  • Establish Routines: Create a structured daily schedule to provide predictability and security.
  • Use Visual Supports: Incorporate visual aids, such as schedules and social stories, to help your child understand expectations and routines.
  • Encourage Communication: Use clear and simple language, and consider alternative communication methods if needed (e.g., picture exchange systems).
  • Create a Sensory-Friendly Environment: Be mindful of sensory sensitivities and create a calming space for your child when needed.

ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects many children. It is characterised by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Understanding ADHD is crucial for parents to support their children effectively.

Signs and Symptoms

Children with ADHD may exhibit a range of symptoms, including:

  • Difficulty paying attention to details
  • Trouble following instructions
  • Impulsiveness and difficulty waiting for their turn
  • Excessive fidgeting or restlessness
  • Challenges in organising tasks and activities

Diagnosis and Assessment at School

We work closely with the Trafford Combined ADHD Service (TCAS) who carry out assessments for ADHD. For a referral to be made to the TCAS pathway, schools need to show evidence of the SEND plan do review process which includes details about the additional provision in place for the child and how effective this has been over a period of time.

This usually means that a child is on the SEND register and has a Pupil Profile.

For children who have a Manchester GP, referrals are made to Manchester CAMHS (The Carol Kendrick Centre)

Supporting Your Child at Home

Here are some practical strategies to help support your child:

  • Establish Routines: Create a consistent daily schedule that includes time for homework, play, and relaxation.
  • Use Visual Aids: Employ charts and checklists to help your child stay organised and focused.
  • Break Tasks into Smaller Steps: Divide larger tasks into manageable parts to prevent overwhelm.
  • Encourage Physical Activity: Regular exercise can help manage energy levels and improve focus.
  • Recognise small achievements to boost self-esteem and motivation
  • Reinforce Zones of Regulation How it Works | The Zones of Regulation

Collaborating with the School

Open communication with your child’s teachers is essential. Discuss your child’s needs and progress, and consider developing an Individual Education Plan (IEP) if necessary.

  • ADHD Foundation:ADHD Foundation
    • A charity providing support and resources for individuals with ADHD and their families.

Professional Support

If you suspect your child may have ADHD, consider seeking help from professionals such as paediatricians, psychologists, or educational specialists. Early intervention can make a significant difference. Please always discuss this with us at school and get in touch with the school SENDCo if you have any concerns.

Encouraging a Positive Outlook

Children with ADHD often possess unique strengths and talents. Encourage your child to explore their interests and build resilience through positive reinforcement and support.
