Knowledge Organisers

> Our Brooklands Curriculum > Our Curriculum > Knowledge Organisers

Our Knowledge Organisers are a simple way for parents and carers to share in their child’s learning journey. As part of our home learning offer, they give a clear insight into what children are learning in history, geography and science, while also providing lots of easy opportunities to talk, explore and discover together. There’s no need for formal written work as the aim is to make learning enjoyable, memorable and part of everyday family life.

Here are some simple ideas for how you can use Knowledge Organisers at home:

  • Talk about the topic – ask your child what they already know and what they have learned in school.
  • Explore key vocabulary – choose a few words and ask your child to explain them, use them in a sentence or spot them in books, programmes or everyday life.
  • Quiz each other – use the facts on the Knowledge Organiser to create quick questions or a family quiz.
  • Make connections – encourage your child to link new learning to previous topics, places they have visited, books they have read or things they have seen in the news.
  • Use the images, maps and diagrams – ask your child to explain what they show and why they are important.
  • Practise retrieval – cover part of the organiser and see how much your child can remember before checking.
  • Research something together – choose a person, place, event, scientific idea or question from the organiser to investigate further.
  • Visit somewhere linked to the topic – museums, local landmarks, parks, galleries and heritage sites can help bring learning to life.
  • Watch or read something connected – find an age-appropriate documentary, book, website or article that develops the topic further.
  • Spot learning in everyday life – look for links to science when cooking or outdoors, geography when travelling or using maps, and history when visiting local places.
  • Encourage children to teach you – ask your child to use the organiser to give you a short explanation of something they have learned.
  • Revisit previous learning – return to older Knowledge Organisers occasionally to help children remember important knowledge over time.
